2 injured in NATO peacekeepers car crash

PRISTINA, Serbia (AP) _ A translator was killed and two French peackeepers were injured in a car crash in northern Kosovo, officials said Thursday. « The vehicle left the road and rolled down the hill for some 200 meters (650 feet), » Lt. Col. Hubert Schmidt, a spokesman for the force, said. He said the French soldiers were sent to a military hospital but their injuries were not life-threatening. Some 16,000 soldiers serve as part of a NATO-led mission known as KFOR that took over the province in the aftermath of the 1999 air war against Serbian troops accused of ill-treatment of Kosovo’s independence seeking ethnic Albanian majority. NATO has said the force would remain in the province even after its political status is resolved pending U.N.-run talks.
